Tasha just stared me down holding the lantern. I had raised her since she was a cub. It was eerie how well the animal could read my moods. At times it was as if we were one. But I couldn't deny the fact that I had to get away from the castle. I needed to breathe and being inside these gilded walls offered little of that.... freedom.
I rubbed her head just behind her ears, thanking her. I took the lantern before I scaled the trellis that afforded me the ability to escape without notice. I was light enough on my feet not to make a noise alerting unwanted attention. The first step was always the most thrilling.
