Alex stood there sipping the beer in his hand as he watched other couples get up and take the floor. Some where high school friends and then some were new people who had moved to his childhood home.
The fundraiser was going well that was being held for a local teen who was battling cancer. That is one of the things he liked most about his town, the people took care of their own.
Abby had been giving him the cold shoulder for days now. Just the mere thought of the woman made him shift from one foot to the other. He felt the urge to adjust himself but wouldn't do so in public. It irritated him to no end that his body wanted nothing more than a good ole roll in the hay with her while his mind just wanted to throttle her for how damn stubborn she could be.
He smiled across the way at the pretty young girl waving to him beside her mother. Lyric was a bright child that made him yearn for home, a wife, but most of all family. Would Abby ever be willing to give him that chance or were they both doomed to be alone the rest of their days?
Damn it if she wasn't even more desirable now then when they first hooked up. How long was she going to hold their past against him? It wasn't right. So when a certain young woman came up, grabbed his hand and hauled him off he didn't pretest in the slightest. Abby on the other hand didn't seem to like her daughters idea on little bit.
"Momma dance with Mr Alex. Alex dance with my Momma." She pulled her mom's hand into his, watched as they walked to the dance floor, beaming like a Cheshire cat and darted off for the food table.
"We really don't have to do this," said Abby trying to pull away from Alex but he was having none of it. He bought her body up flesh with his.
"No Lyric is right we need to talk. Abby please just give me a chance. I'm not that same stupid young kid that took off with stars in his eyes for bigger and brighter things unkown."
"How do I know you won't just up and leave again?"
"You don't but haven't I proven to you this is where I want to be. I haven't left yet."
"Yet being the operative word there."
"Damn it Abby ! Quit being so damn stubborn and give us a chance to see if we can make it."
"I'm not looking for a fling Alex. I'm not looking for someone to play house with. I have to look out for my daughter Lyric."
"Don't you mean 'our daughter' ?"
She stopped dancing even though the song hadn't ended. Once more she struggled against him but his arms held her tight.
"How did you know?"
"I have my ways. I want to get to know my daughter. I want to get to know her mother all over again. What do you say?"
"I...I don't...know Alex. This is a huge step."
"Like I said darling I'm not going anywhere." He kissed the top of her forehead as the music moved into a slower more romantic beat for the dancing couples.
